Affording Salisbury

Salisbury School recognizes that access and affordability are two of the most important themes for the future of private school education-be it a secondary school or a college. With Salisbury’s mission in mind, we recognize the great value of providing need-based financial aid that includes awards ranging from $1,000 to full tuition support to 37% of our students. Financial need varies, of course, based on one’s income and assets. As a simple principle, every family makes a financial sacrifice, commitment and investment when their son attends Salisbury School. Please do not hesitate to apply to Salisbury because of the tuition cost. While there are more applicants for aid than we can support, even with our generous budget, it would be a mistake to opt out of the admissions process based on an assumption that our education is not affordable. We look forward to partnering with you in the admissions process.

An Investment That’s Worth It

We are proud to be a prestigious Connecticut boarding school offering financial aid to many of its students. Even if you don’t qualify for assistance, however, there are several reasons to consider a Salisbury education for your son. Our students enjoy a comprehensive, modern education in a supportive environment, and our graduates are better positioned to apply to top-tier colleges.

As a parent, you want to give your child every advantage possible. Browse our website to learn more about the value of a Salisbury education, and discover why we’re a worthy choice in Connecticut all-boys boarding schools, with financial aid or without.

2017 - 2018 Financial Aid Information

Financial Aid Policies and Guidelines for 2017-18

The financial aid committee calculates need-based aid awards after careful consideration of financial documentation provided by a boy’s family. Awards are based on need as established by the principles of the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS). When allocating financial aid, the committee accounts for certain costs above tuition and fees, both required and optional. The goal is to make fair and objective financial aid decisions. Financial aid decisions are made independent of admissions decisions. Although we have very good financial aid budget, there are not enough funds to support everyone who qualifies.

In order to be considered for financial aid the following steps must be followed and the resulting forms must be submitted by February 1. You may begin the process as early as November 1. We only evaluate need afteryou have finished entering the required objective data.

1. Complete the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) online at www.sss.nais.org. Salisbury’s school code is 7060.

2. Upload a copy of your most recent IRS Form 1040 including all schedules and a copy of your most recent W-2 forms online at www.sss.nais.org. This website also has directions for mailing documents. All aid awards are considered pending until a current year copy of the tax forms is received. Please do not send the documents to Salisbury School; you will be best served by using SSS.

Salisbury School considers the decision to seek an independent school education to be one requiring the active support of both natural parents. This cannot be altered by the assertion that one parent has disclaimed responsibility for educational expenses. Bearing in mind the obligation step-parents have to their natural children, we also consider the assets of step-parents. Each separated or divorced case is unique and may require further clarification or communication.

Additional awards are available to families regardless of demonstrated need. These exceptional grants include:

Merit Scholarships

A limited number of merit awards are given to exceptional candidates as determined by the admissions committee. An admissions candidate’s full credentials are evaluated, with special consideration for his academic and leadership skills and potential.

Freedom Fund Scholarship

The Freedom Fund was established by the Salisbury School Executive Committee in honor of John Niven ’76, Garnet “Ace” Bailey P ’97, and J.C. Connors P ’98 all of whom died in the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Awards from the Freedom Fund provide partial scholarships available to families affected during these tragic events. The scope of the Fund has been expanded to include the children of US soldiers.

Patrick Stern ’66 Memorial Scholarship

The Patrick Stern ’66 Memorial Scholarship is designated as a financial aid award given to a qualified student with a physical challenge. Mr. Stern sustained a life-altering injury and wanted this gift to aid young men who face similar physical challenges as he did. Salisbury School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, or ethnic origin. Approximately 33% of the Salisbury students receive financial aid that may consist of grants, loans or both. These families represent a wide-range of demonstrated need. Awards are subject to review annually and families must file an application each year by February 1. Returning families are notified prior to new applicants, usually in early March. Generally, financial aid awards do not change unless a family’s financial circumstances have.

Please contact Director of Financial Aid Tom Spinella with questions at 860-435-5819 or tspinella@salisburyschool.org. or visit www.sss.nais.org.
